“The objective of this research was to evaluate the air stripping technology for the

removal of ammonia from landfill leachates. In this process, pH, temperature, airflow rate and operation time were investigated. Furthermore, the relationship between the leachate alkalinity and the ammonia removal efficiency during the process was studied. The leachate used in the tests was generated in the Gramacho Municipal Solid Waste Landfill (Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil). The best results were obtained with a temperature of 60oC, and they were independent of the pH value for 7h of operation (the ammonia nitrogen removal was greater than 95%). A strong influence of the leachate alkalinity on the ammonia HM781-36B in vivo nitrogen removal was observed; as the alkalinity

decreased, the ammonia concentration also decreased because of prior CO2 removal, which increased the pH and consequently favored the NH3 stripping. The air flow rate, in the values evaluated (73, 96 and 120 L air.h1. L1 of leachate), did not influence the results.”
“Hb Fontainebleau (HBA2: c.64G bigger than C) is a rare alpha-globin variant, which has previously been described in only 10 individuals worldwide. We report here 12 additional TNF-alpha inhibitor cases identified in our laboratory. These included the first case of a homozygosity for Hb Fontainebleau and cases in which Hb Fontainebleau occurred in combination with deletional and nondeletional alpha-thalassemia (alpha-thal). The prevalence of Hb Fontainebleau in the samples submitted to

our laboratory for premarital hemoglobinopathy screening was 0.24%, the highest reported prevalence to date, indicating that this is a comparatively common variant in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).”
“Nutritional quality of pork is a significant factor for consumers’ health. Feeding n-3 PUFA to pigs, using linseed, improves pork nutritional quality. A meta-analysis involving 1006 pigs reported in 24 publications was carried out to assess the effects of dietary Combretastatin A4 linseed on alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosapentaenoic acid (DPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) content in muscle and adipose tissue. Data showed positive effects of n-3 PUPA on muscle fatty acid composition: ALA + 137%, EPA + 188%, DPA + 51% and DHA + 12%. Same results were observed in adipose tissue: ALA + 297%, EPA + 149%, DPA + 88% and DHA + 18%. A positive correlation between dietary treatment and ALA and EPA content in muscle (P smaller than 0.001) and adipose tissue (P = 0.036) was observed. A significant association between DPA (P = 0.04) and DHA (P = 0.011) and live weight in muscle was observed. Feeding linseed to pig improves the nutritional pork quality, raising the n-3 PUFA content in muscle and adipose tissue. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
