Our data show no differences for both thyroid function and prevalence of autoimmune disorders during pregnancy; however, a significant increase in thyroid autoimmunity was seen in women previously affected by gestational diabetes. This increased prevalence of thyroid autoimmunity was not associated with the development of impaired glucose metabolism after pregnancy. Conclusions. Our data suggest that maternal hyperglycemia is a risk factor for the development of thyroid autoimmunity, a conclusion that should now be confirmed in a larger cohort of patients.

This cross-sectional study was carried out among the students of the University of Mersin in December 2008. One thousand and forty-two voluntary students participated in this study and answered the questions presented in the self-administered questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of demographic information and the NCT-501 students’ awareness, knowledge and Semaxanib use of EC.

The study sample consisted of 532 males and 510 females. The mean age of the participants was 20.4 +/- 1.8. Overall, 149 (14.3%) students were aware of EC, and among those, 125 (83.9%) students correctly identified 72 h as the time limit for the methods to be used. The main sources of knowledge about EC were schools (38.9%), friends (18.8%), healthcare providers (17.4%), media (16.1%) and other sources (8.7%). The source publications of the key primary studies published from approximately 1962 to 1992 were examined, followed by a brief review of the earliest reviews in this field. These studies were placed in the context of developments in alcohol research and in public health.

Summary of background data. Spine procedures are associated with high costs. Implants are a main contributor of these costs. Intraoperative waste further exacerbates the high cost of surgery.

Methods. Data were collected during a 25-month period from one academic medical center (15-month observational period, 10-month post-awareness program). The total number of spine procedures and the incidence of intraoperative waste were recorded prospectively. Other variables recorded included the Kinase Inhibitor Library nmr type of product wasted, cost associated with the product or implant wasted, and reason for the waste.

Results. Intraoperative waste occurred in 20.2% of the procedures prior to the educational program and in 10.3% of the procedures after the implementation of the program (P < 0.0001). Monthly costs associated with surgical waste were, on average, $17680 prior to the awareness intervention and $5876 afterwards (P = 0.0006). Prior to the intervention, surgical waste represented 4.3% of total operative spine budget. After the awareness program this proportion decrease to an average of 1.2% (P = 0.003).

Conclusion. Intraoperative waste in spine surgery exacerbates the already costly procedures. Extrapolation of this data to the national level leads to an annual estimate of $126,722,000 attributable to intraoperative spine waste.
